Exploring Greek Life: A Guide to Fraternities and Sororities

With more than 50 fraternities and sororities on campus,  is a vibrant part of the student experience. Whether you’re looking to get involved, expand your network, or find a close-knit community that lasts well beyond college, joining a fraternity or sorority could be the perfect fit.

Still unsure about recruitment, also known as the “rush” process? Maybe you've heard some of the common Greek life stereotypes that give you pause? In this guide, we’ll break down frequently asked questions and key resources to help you decide if fraternity or sorority life at the U of A is right for you.

Are There Different Types of Greek Organizations?

At the �鶹��ý, every fraternity and sorority is part of one of three governing councils:

&�Բ�����;•&�Բ�����; – Men’s fraternities

&�Բ�����;• – Women’s sororities

&�Բ�����;• – Cultural and identity-based organizations for men and women

Each council has its own recruitment process. IFC and PHC chapters participate in structured fall recruitment, which requires pre-registration. 

USFC chapters follow more individualized joining processes. Each school year, USFC hosts , which is open to all students and does not require pre-registration. It’s a great way to explore culturally based organizations and meet members in a welcoming, low-pressure setting.

What are the Benefits of Joining a Fraternity or Sorority?

Joining a fraternity or sorority at the �鶹��ý offers far more than just social events. As a student, Greek life can lead you down a path to personal growth, leadership development, and provide lifelong support.

Academic Support

Academic success is a top priority in Greek life at the �鶹��ý. Most chapters offer study groups, mentorship, and academic recognition to help members succeed. Many fraternity and sorority members meet or exceed the university’s average GPA. Each council has minimum GPA requirements for membership:

&�Բ�����;• PHC – 3.0 high school core GPA or 2.75 college GPA (12+ units)

What Does the U of A Rush Process Look Like?

Sorority Recruitment Process

�鶹��ý's  hosts a structured, in-person sorority recruitment every fall before the semester begins, providing a supportive and organized way to explore all chapters. The process begins with registration through the , followed by a one-time registration fee.

After registering, Potential New Members (PNMs) are asked to submit a short video introducing themselves and answer a few questions to help chapters get to know them better.

Recruitment officially kicks off with PNM Orientation, followed by a series of themed recruitment rounds. With each round, students engage more deeply with the chapters and gradually narrow their preferences – helping them find the sorority that feels like the best fit.

Fraternity Recruitment Process

hosts a structured fall recruitment each year – a multi-day process designed to help students explore chapters and identify which ones resonate the most with their interests. After , PNMs are invited to attend Orientation and the Healthy Brotherhood Program. Recruitment includes several rounds of house tours and chapter events, leading up to Bid Day when students receive invitations to join.

– which represents culturally and identity-based fraternities, including historically Black, Latinx, Asian, and multicultural organizations – offers a unique recruitment process. Unlike IFC, USFC chapters conduct membership intake processes that vary by organization and may include interviews, group activities, and educational sessions. USFC Week, held during the second week of the fall semester, is a great opportunity to meet members and learn more about each chapter’s process in a welcoming, low-pressure setting.

Five Tips for Choosing the Right Chapter

When the rush process begins, remember that finding the right fit is a two-way street. Chapters are looking for members who align with their values just as much as you’re looking for a community where you feel at home. Shared values, campus involvement, and overall chapter culture all play a key role in your success and experience in Greek life. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the process with confidence:

1.  Take a Deep Breath – Recruitment can move quickly, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Try to be present, enjoy each interaction, and trust your instincts.

2. Prepare for Small Talk – Recruitment is all about meeting new people. Reflect on why you want to join Greek life, what your values and interests are, and what you hope to gain from the experience.

3. Be Open-Minded – You might start with a specific chapter in mind, but keep an open mind as you explore. The “right fit” may be somewhere unexpected, and that’s okay!

4. Ask Questions That Matter – Don’t be afraid to ask about academic support, philanthropy involvement, financial commitments, and time expectations. It shows maturity and helps you make a well-informed decision.

5. Think Long-Term – Consider where you'll feel a true sense of belonging – not just for now, but for the years ahead. The relationships and support systems you build will shape your college experience and beyond.

Erika’s Advice for Maximizing Your College Years

Hi there, my name is Erika! I’m from San Antonio, Texas and I’m graduating with degrees in Spanish and Journalism and a minor in public relations from the �鶹��ý.

I’ve been in your shoes before as a first-year student, and I’ve got some expert advice from my four years as a Wildcat. 

1. Get involved right away

Don’t wait to get involved – jump right in! That’s the easiest way to make friends, explore your passions, and find a community. You can get started right off the bat with events like Bash at the Rec and Club Fair, which happen early in the semester to show you all the opportunities our school has to offer. 

During my first year on campus, I joined  (Model U.N.) and started as a reporter for , our student newspaper. Model U.N. has been my absolute favorite part of my undergraduate experience. Through this club, I met many of my best friends and got to travel to places such as Chicago and Hermosillo, Mexico.

Whether you’re interested in sports, music, art, politics, culture, or video games, there’s something for you! �鶹��ý has more than 400 student organizations where you can start having fun from your very first semester. 

2. Enjoy everything Tucson has to offer

One of the best parts about the �鶹��ý is its location. Tucson is a beautiful town with so much to offer. It’s the perfect blend of big city and college town.  

Tucson is a designated , which means it’s full of amazing food. There are also tons of gorgeous natural spots where you can soak up the sun year-round. And if it gets too hot, you can always drive up Mount Lemmon for cooler weather and gorgeous views. 

No car? No worries. The  connects you with Fourth Avenue, downtown Tucson, and more with ease.

Looking for something fun to do on the Sun Link route? I recommend checking out the shops on Fourth Avenue, like , or stopping by the Mercado District for a quick bite to eat –  and  are both delicious!

Falling in love with Tucson has been one of the best parts of my college experience, so don’t miss out. 

3. Don’t put too much stress on yourself 

Enjoy your first-year experience without stressing too much about the future. You’ve got time to figure things out. And don’t forget it’s okay to change your mind – I even changed my major after my first year! 

Don’t be afraid to try lots of things and see what you like. Take it from me: Don’t waste time comparing yourself to others or doubting yourself. Things will fall into place eventually if you keep putting yourself out there. You got this! 

If you need help or have questions, there are lots of resources right here on campus to guide you. The  can connect you with resources like  and to make sure you have everything you need to thrive at �鶹��ý. If the transition to college feels tough, I recommend visiting  (CAPS) right on-campus for extra guidance. 

Lastly, take some time for self-care. I love to go for a walk around campus or stop by somewhere calming, like  on University Boulevard, to take a break from it all.

Embrace all these new experiences and your first year here will be unforgettable!

Four things you can do as a high school junior

1. Participate

Your participation in extracurricular activities can help with your admission to college and acceptance into special programs. Colleges know that what you do outside of class says a lot about the person you are and what you’ll bring to their institution. Plus, your involvement in clubs, volunteer organizations, and community projects can check an important box on many scholarship applications. Once you get to college, staying involved is easy. At the �鶹��ý, we have hundreds of student clubs and organizations where Wildcats can help others, make friends, and learn new skills.

2. Practice

Taking a practice or Preliminary Standardized Admissions Test (PSAT) will prepare you for the real thing and is required for consideration. And while SAT/ACT test scores are not necessary for admission to the �鶹��ý, they can help. Standardized admissions tests can reveal your academic strengths and weaknesses, aid in course selection, and support your application for scholarships and special programs. 3. Prepare

Have you thought about how you'll pay for college? Do you know that most students attending the �鶹��ý rely on some type of financial aid? It’s never too early to , including loans, scholarships, and work-study, to see which you qualify for, and which might work best for you. Now is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the or FAFSA – which is required to receive most types of financial aid. Deadlines for FAFSA and scholarships can seem to come up fast, but if you do a little research and prepare ahead of time, you'll be ready.

4. Visit

Taking a tour is a great way to get to know the college you’ll be attending soon. A first-hand experience is hard to beat when it comes to getting a feel for a campus and the surrounding area. You can get to know the �鶹��ý and Tucson better by joining us for a virtual or an in-person visit. Check out our or events designed specifically for current juniors or seniors in high school. And remember to pack your flip-flops because we get the sunshine—more than 350 days a year on average!

Why I Joined a Sorority at the �鶹��ý?

Come fall, our social media feeds pages are filled with #OOTDs, choreographed sorority house tours, and in-depth POVs of what the Greek life rush process is like. 

It's not that intense at the �鶹��ý – trust me! Hi, my name is Malia Daft. Here's what I wish I had known before going through recruitment and ending up at my perfect chapter.

Alpha Chi Omega is a sorority under the  (PHC), so my experience speaks mostly to what you can expect during that sorority recruitment process. 

The Benefits of Joining Greek Life

Coming from out of state, I really wanted to put myself out there and meet people from all over. I had heard "you meet your best friends in a sorority" – as cliche as that sounds, it's so true. I met my absolute best friends in Alpha Chi Omega, and I would have never had that opportunity without joining .

Joining a fraternity or sorority is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond ordinary friendships. Bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood are formed within an organization and provide fraternity and sorority members with a home away from home, academic support, mentorship, career networking, opportunities to give back to the community, and a close group of support at a large university. Being a part of a fraternity or sorority exposes students to new ideas and experiences that they may not have encountered otherwise. The benefits of membership are extensive and they continue beyond graduation.

Throughout the year, all organizations – regardless of council – host social events with members and guests, study nights, complete community service, raise money for various philanthropic causes, have leadership development opportunities, and so much more. Members of fraternities and sororities have higher GPAs than non-members, higher retention and graduation rates, and they cite stronger university connections. They are involved in and leaders of clubs and organizations all over campus!

Many of the chapters at the university have a chapter facility. This is a house that some members live in and all members are able to access. It is a great place to meet other members of the chapter, study, have movie nights, and so much more. If you are interested in learning more about which chapters have facilities, you can .

It’s important to know that a facility does not make an experience better or worse – it just makes it different. Chapters that don’t have facilities still have eventful and in-depth experiences and memberships.

While fraternities and sororities are popular at big schools like ours, you don't have to join one. I have many friends that are not a part of Greek life that I met in dorms, classes, and clubs. Personally, I love it. Being in Alpha Chi Omega gives me so many opportunities to help within the Tucson community and meet so many people from all over the country. I love our philanthropy events, sisterhood retreats, and even just hanging out at our house. 

Another pro is the scholarships to help with tuition or paying fraternity and sorority costs. Many are even only accessible to students involved in fraternity and sorority programs.

An extra academic perk: motivation to keep your GPA high. You have to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA for most houses on campus, but it varies from chapter to chapter. 

Breaking Down the Greek Life Stereotypes

We all know the common fraternity and sorority stereotypes. And while these stereotypes have been around for a while, they are anything but accurate. All fraternities and sororities participate in events and raise money for a common cause. There are events every semester where the community comes together to do fun activities such as car washes, kickball, or serving food to raise money. My favorite philanthropy event that my sorority puts on is our kickball tournament each fall. Seeing everyone come together and participate in a fun event that donates money to a good cause is so great.

The easiest way to break down the stereotypes about fraternities and sororities is to go through recruitment and meet members! Participating in recruitment does not mean you are required to join a chapter; you can remove yourself from the process at any time.

What Do I Need to Know �鶹��ý the Rush Process?

“Rush Week” is the term many people use to describe the recruitment/joining process for a fraternity or sorority. In general, it’s often referring to an Interfraternity Council (IFC) or PHC joining process, but if you are interested in a cultural or identity based organization under the United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC) council, you can find details about their . Students are able to participate in both the IFC or PHC primary recruitment and USFC week, but they are not able to hold membership in organizations in both councils.

All students who participate in the PHC recruitment process are assigned a Recruitment Counselor, or RC. This is a person who is a current member of a chapter and has taken a step away from her chapter to help students find their place in the Panhellenic community. Your RC will be able to answer all your recruitment and UA questions. RCs are assigned and reach out to you once the registration process is completed.

Going through recruitment can be draining. You may be tired and even a little confused, but after all the chaos, it is so worth it. Once you meet your RC, they will be able to give you tips and tricks to help you with the recruitment process. You will also have a Potential New Member (PNM) Orientation. This is a session where every single woman participating in the process gets together and learns what to expect, hears stories of current members' experiences, and learns about things like women’s empowerment. It is an exciting kick-off to the process!

Rush typically starts right before school starts and ends on Labor Day. The recruitment process begins with PNM Orientation on Sunday, Aug. 24. You will have two days to view informational and educational videos about each sorority in the community and then over the next two weeks there are in-person events where you get the chance to meet dozens of women within the community and learn about that chapter’s values, sisterhood, membership requirements, and the experience overall. Keep an open mind: During rush, you're exploring your options. Remember that it's less about if a chapter likes you and more important that you like them. 

After each set of recruitment, you will make selections of which chapters you feel the strongest connection with and are interested in learning more about. You will be given a schedule of events for each set. As you move through sets you will go back to fewer chapters but for longer times. (Don’t worry if it sounds confusing, after your PNM Orientation it will make sense! And you can always ask your RC questions.) Throughout the process, you are getting to know the chapter as a whole and you should be asking yourself, “Can I see myself here?”

Sorority Rush Week Advice

• Register as soon as possible.

• Try not to stress.

•&�Բ�����;Make friends along the way (it’s good to have friends in different chapters).

• Take it day by day.

• Trust the process.

• Remember: You always go where you're meant to be.

• Water (it is very hot walking between houses).

• Change of shoes – you don't want to walk in heels all day.

• Portable phone charger.

• Snacks.

Four Tips for Keeping Cool

Tucson weather is the gift that keeps on giving. But even Wildcats fresh from the snowbelt want to stay chill through Tucson’s warmest months. Here are four hot tips for cooling down when the mercury rises.

1. Make a splash.

When it comes to a quick cool down, the go-to for many Wildcats is a dip in fifteen lanes of heat-beating bliss that’s open year round. You can chill poolside or jump into swim lessons, lifeguard training, competitive water polo, or intramural pool basketball. Plus, throughout the year, there are opportunities to try log rolling, get SCUBA certified, do some slacklining, or attend a "dive-in" movie.

2. Get above it all.

At 9,100 feet in elevation with temperatures 20-30 degrees below Tucson highs, Mt. Lemmon offers a natural way to escape the heat. Its cool breezes, tall pines, spectacular views, pools, and lakes are only a short drive from campus. Wildcats can take their mountain adventuring to new heights by renting camping equipment, canoes, bikes, and more through the university’s , and stargazers can top off their trip with a visit to the University’s observatory.

3. Explore the great indoors.

There are numerous museums, special collections, galleries, and performing arts theaters on and around campus. And each, along with the and (with its very own tropical rainforest), offers ways to cool off while wondering over the treasures they hold.

The Road to Research as an Undergrad

Everything you need to know about the wide world of research at �鶹��ý.

Getting involved in research may seem daunting at first, but the good news is that research is available to �鶹��ý students in a wide variety of disciplines, including first-year students. And the best part? You can get involved as early as your first year on campus.

But what opportunities are there? And how can you get started? Let’s take a look at some resources!

Why Pursue Research?

Even if you’re not sure about graduate school or even what you want to pursue, research can help you discover new interests and find out what you enjoy. Research is also a great résumé-builder and develops skills like communication, leadership, working with data, networking, and critical thinking. 

At �鶹��ý, undergraduate research is managed through the newly formed . The collaborative brings together resources from different offices on campus to connect students with the tools they need to get started in research.

The collaborative is managed by Kimberly Sierra-Cajas, the director of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry and Kelley Merriam-Castro, the program manager for Undergraduate Research Initiatives. 

“Research can drive policy, research can drive change,” Merriam-Castro said. “This is where the new knowledge is created that helps us become a better society.”  

The collaborative is particularly interested in making research accessible to different groups of students, such as first-generation or transfer students.

“We need students from all backgrounds involved in research because they lend a very unique perspective,” Sierra-Cajas said.

Getting Started: Finding Courses, Workshops, and Projects

Through this Undergraduate Research & Inquiry Collaborative, students can attend workshops that break down different aspects of the research process, and access a of university faculty that are interested in working with undergraduate researchers.

In addition, there are a growing number of courses that incorporate research activities available at �鶹��ý. Offerings are listed and updated through the collaborative’s .

• Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences () allow students to tackle research questions and work with faculty on projects early in their academic careers. Many of these courses have no prerequisites and help students gain experience as soon as possible.
• Vertically Integrated Projects () are multidisciplinary research opportunities led by faculty that undergraduate students can apply for and earn credit through. 
• Wildcats also have the opportunity to join the for free. This connects students with a whole network of researchers and resources. 
• Another great resource for interested students is the , a group of six current students who have been in your shoes and are well-versed in the world of undergraduate research. They’re available to meet with students of any discipline to give them practical advice and help them find the perfect project. 

There are plenty of research projects that will meet the needs of different students, including summer opportunities, paid opportunities, and flexible projects designed for even the busiest students. 

The Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Collaborative provides funding for faculty members to hire student researchers. Students can work on research projects through work-study funding as well. 

Connect With Your Professors

If you’re not sure what to do first, think about a class you’ve really been interested in. Finding a faculty member whose work interests you is a great way to get started. 

“Make connections with professors in your classes, go to their office hours and ask questions,” Merriam-Castro said. She recommends meeting them in person and finding a time that’s convenient for everyone. 

Merriam-Castro encourages students to look at the world around them and ask questions about what intrigues them. Nearly anything, in any field, can become a research question.  

“The earlier you can narrow down your career path interests, the better, because then you make decisions based on what you actually have tried,” Sierra-Cajas said.

1. Artificial Intelligence Club

Curious about machine learning? Fascinated by chatbots? Ready to explore how AI is shaping the future? The Artificial Intelligence Club is your launchpad. Through hands-on workshops, collaborative projects, and networking events, this student-led group helps Wildcats build real-world skills in one of today’s fastest-growing fields.

2. Bodybuilding and Fitness Club

Some students arrive on campus just beginning their fitness journeys. Others already know their way around a squat rack. No matter your skillset, the Bodybuilding and Fitness Club offers a welcoming space to build strength, confidence, and community. This co-ed club focuses on wellness, support, and shared progress – with group training sessions and even the chance to compete in its own student-run show.

3. Bookworms

Love getting lost in a good story? Bookworms is a student-run book club for anyone who finds joy in all forms of literature. With regular meetings every two weeks, this club creates a welcoming space to share ideas, discover new authors, and celebrate the written word.

4. Comedy Corner

Trade Saturday Night Live for Wednesday night laughs with Comedy Corner, the �鶹��ý’s longest-running improv comedy group. Since 1979, this club has been bringing the funny with unscripted performances, creative games, and a whole lot of chaos – in the best way. What else would you expect from the university that Kristen Wiig attended?

5. Culinary Kaleidoscope Club (Culinary Cats)

Hungry to explore the world through food? Culinary Cats celebrates global flavors and cultures through shared meals, hands-on cooking experiences, and community events. No culinary background? No problem. All you need is curiosity, an appetite, and a willingness to learn.

6. Disney Club

Put on your favorite mouse ears (perhaps you have multiple?) and hang out with the Disney-dedicated. From trivia nights to weekend trips to Disneyland, this group brings the “Happiest Place on Earth” right back to the �鶹��ý.

7. Fish and Wildlife Club

�鶹��ý American Fisheries and Wildlife Society Student Chapter brings together students passionate about wildlife, ecology, and the great outdoors. With events like socials at Patagonia Lake, the annual Nature’s Banquet, and volunteer projects, the Fish and Wildlife Club offers ways to explore, protect, and celebrate �鶹��ý’s diverse ecosystems.

8. Flying Samaritans

Flying Samaritans provides free medical and dental services and public health education to the medically underserved community of Agua Prieta, Mexico. Gain experience – and a lot of good karma – as a healthcare provider.

9. Grupo Folklorico Miztontli

Showcase Mexican culture through folklórico dance, music, history, language, and Mexican traditions. Miztontli also provides members with leadership skills, public presentation and speaking skills, cultural awareness and understanding, discipline, and teamwork.

10. Home Brewers of �鶹��ý

Always craving crisp ciders, fizzy kombucha, and any other small-batch brews? Home Brewers of �鶹��ý is all about the craft – and the community – of fermentation. With workshops, bottling sessions, and behind-the-scenes brewery tours, this fun college club is always brewing up something worth attending.

A club that also acts as your weekly reset button? Sign me up! This student-led group creates a chill, judgment-free space to breathe deep, slow down, and reconnect – with yourself and a like-minded community. Monday meetups feature everything from guided meditations to mindful art sessions, all centered on reflection, and good vibes.

The magnificence of mushrooms – oh, are you not familiar? Learn from the MycoCats Club, which seeks to engage students in mushroom cultivation and mycology, providing opportunities to gain hands-on experience through mushroom cultivation and foraging.

America’s fastest-growing sport has found its home at the �鶹��ý. With hundreds of members and weekly open play at the Robson Tennis Center, the Pickleball Club is the perfect way to stay active and meet new people. Whether you’re just learning the ropes or want to try out for competitive play, this club serves up a lot of fun.

14. Ramblers Hiking Club

With five mountain ranges in Tucson’s backyard and the �鶹��ý Trail just up the road, adventure is always within reach. The Ramblers Hiking Club helps students explore it all, hosting hikes for every experience level. It’s a breath of fresh air, a break from the books, and a chance to connect with nature (and fellow Wildcats).

Saddle up! �鶹��ý Rodeo Team gives students the chance to compete in rodeos across the Grand Canyon Region. As part of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, this team brings Wildcat pride to the arena – no matter the event.

Similar to Flying Samaritans, but focused on the local population, Street Medicine Tucson provides basic medical care and health education to individuals experiencing homelessness in Tucson while simultaneously providing undergraduate students with hands-on experience.

17. UnderSkore

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or have every K-pop routine memorized from your bedroom mirror, UnderSkore might just be your next mainstage. Founded in 2017, this inclusive dance team brings together students who share a love for K-pop and performance, welcoming all skill levels to learn, grow, and shine. through the years!

18. Wildcat Formula Racing

Designing a racecar from scratch. Hauling it across the country to compete at Michigan International Speedway. Just another school year for the students behind Wildcat Formula Racing. This engineering club builds a formula-style car from the ground up each year. Open wheels, open cockpit, and open to all majors who are ready to dive into real-world teamwork.

Sometimes just making it around the Mall without gasping for air feels like a win – and the Wildcat Running Club is here to celebrate that. This all-levels group hosts weekly runs and community events built around fitness, friendship, and fun. With morning jogs and sunset sprints, it’s a great way to explore campus and find your stride alongside fellow Wildcats.

A home away from home for international students, Worldwide Wildcats is all about building global friendships and celebrating cultures from around the world. From movie nights to volleyball matches, this community-centered club creates a welcoming space for students to connect, unwind, and feel at home – wherever they’re from.
